Test flights in sight<\/h3>\n

First things first though! Happy New Year from the whole team and welcome to our first newsletter of the new decade!<\/p>\n

This year is extremely important for SolarStratos and promises to be action packed. The test flights will resume, Raphael will fly the solar plane himself for the first time, we\u2019ll be doing two-person flights, we will attempt the first flights at 10,000 m for as solar and electric airplane and many more surprises.<\/p>\n

Our team is growing<\/h3>\n

Une \u00e9co-exploration exp\u00e9rimentale telle que SolarStratos se d\u00e9veloppe de fa\u00e7on ininterrompue. Pour mener \u00e0 bien celle-ci, il est imp\u00e9ratif de b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier des connaissances et des comp\u00e9tences n\u00e9cessaires, en s\u2019adaptant constamment aux \u00e9volutions technologiques. Une \u00e9quipe incroyable et passionn\u00e9e met tout en \u0153uvre pour que notre avion solaire rejoigne bient\u00f4t la stratosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

Cette \u00e9quipe grandit r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement. Apr\u00e8s avoir engag\u00e9 Miguel A. Iturmendi, en qualit\u00e9 de second pilote d\u2019essai et d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur en a\u00e9ronautique, nous avons le plaisir d\u2019annoncer l\u2019arriv\u00e9e dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe de Marc-Andr\u00e9 Pointet, ing\u00e9nieur de la Haute Ecole d\u2019Ing\u00e9nierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud (HEIG-VD).<\/p>\n

Nous avons \u00e9galement renforc\u00e9 notre secteur \u00ab\u00a0\u00e9v\u00e9nements et partenaires\u00a0\u00bb, avec l\u2019engagement de Floriane Pochon, nouvelle responsable de ce p\u00f4le important.<\/p>\n

Nous leur souhaitons la bienvenue au sein de notre \u00e9quipe et beaucoup de plaisir dans cette belle aventure.<\/p>\n

Reliability of the new wings<\/h3>\n

During the winter, we focussed on stress testing the wings. To do that, we first built different samples of longerons (the longitudinal structural component of an aircraft\u2019s fuselage), then we loaded them up until they broke in order to understand what resistance the different materials and manufacturing techniques would allow. Once this was established, we were able to select the best carbon fibre and the best manufacturing technique to achieve the strongest, stiffest and lightest wings possible.<\/p>\n

Once the longeron experiments were complete, we built a full test wing, slightly shorter than the flight wing and loaded that up with over a ton of sandbags and water until it broke.<\/p>\n

We at last had the information that we needed to create the final wings. Our technical team now knows that the SolarStratos wings have a margin of safety that is slightly higher than the norm, which in turn means that, if necessary, they can slightly increase the take-off weight.<\/p>\n

Embedded cells<\/h3>\n

The new SolarStratos wings will be equipped with more resistant photovoltaic cells embedded in the wings by our scientific partners at the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology. Embedding the cells will make them more reliable and solid.<\/p>\n

The base will stay in Payerne<\/h3>\n

In 2016, the city of Payerne and the Broye Regional Community allowed us to build our base on the Aeropole site for three years. We have just received the exciting news that this permission has been extended until the end of our eco-exploration. This means we can continue our adventure so thank you to the local, regional and confederate authorities for the trust placed in us, and their support!<\/p>\n
