A former career officer with the Swiss Air Force, Michael initially held the positions of Flight Test Engineer and Weapon System Officer. These activities enabled him to clock up several hundred flight hours on different types of aircraft (including PC-7, F-5 Tiger and F\/A-18 Hornet). After acquiring a Master of Advanced Studies in Information Technology from the University of Berne and completing the F\/A-18 transition course, he spent 7 years representing the interests of the Swiss operational community as Liaison Officer to the US Navy in California. Back in Switzerland, he took over responsibility for air operations with tactical data links.
